After waking up earlier than he’d planned, the emptiness in his large room echoed in the silence as he stared at his alarm clock to his right. The thing hadn't even gotten a chance to ring.
4:40am.
Staring to his left side at the framed photo against the lampstand, he drew in a long and deep sigh, fighting the urge to pick up the photo and spend time thinking again. Pushing the thoughts and memories that the photo brought, he finally pushed himself out of bed and went to the shower. As he showered, his mind kept bringing up images of one person in particular. What was wrong with the girl? Didn't she realize that he could do away with her with so much as a quick movement of his finger? Why was she bent on annoying his life? His mind also welcomed the way she was standing up to him, challenging his every word, being her silly and laughing self, like she had no fear in the world whatsoever. Did she know about the impending danger that was looming over all of them? He closed his eyes as the water cascaded down his dark hair, washing away the oils that had gathered there.
God, if only things had been different.
After being satisfied with his shower, he stepped out to the sound of his phone ringing. One look at the caller ID and he could feel his teeth seethe with anger. If not that he worked at the company and his livelihood pretty much depended on it, he would much rather not entertain his father.
“Yes?” he answered on the third ring.
“Son, can you hear me?”
Kaiden felt the frown that was beginning to show up on his face. “What is it? Losing your hearing abilities already, Alex?”
There was a pause; and Kaiden felt the temptation to just hang up and maybe teleport to his father’s house to see what the old man wanted this time.
Finally, his father spoke again, “The cops were here last night saying that you were determined to discover this attacker on your own. Who gave you such a mandate, son?”
Kaiden raised his brows and immediately lowered them as he put the call on speaker and began putting on some clothes.
“I’m just trying to make this as quickly as possible, Alex. We all know the cops can be slow.”
“Oh you forgot the rules already, Kaiden? No interfering with the cops unless we are specifically asked to do so.”
Kaiden released a sigh as he began buttoning his shirt. “They should be grateful.”
“It’s not in your place to do anything about that now. You need to cease immediately. l-”
Kaiden could feel the anger burn in his throat like a virus as he let his father trail off. He closed his eyes again, and the image of the young woman came to mind.
“Argh! Stop bothering me.”
“What? Do you understand what I just said? Stop interfering with the job of the police in this matter. They will handle it.”
Kaiden felt irritated. “And here I thought you hated the Santzans.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“Like I said, I am trying to make this process as quick and painless as possible. You suspect them, right? I’m just trying to help.”
There was another pause. And this time, Kaiden was about to press the ‘end call’ button when his father spoke again.
“You really hate them, don't you? After all, your mother was a Santzan. You don’t hate her, do you?”
Kaiden gritted his teeth. “I don’t want to talk about that. My mother was different.”
“You don't know that. You never met her.”
“Stop it.”
“Son -”
“Don’t call me that!” Kaiden blasted through the mouthpiece as he slammed the phone on his bed. And after that, he ended the call, unable to stop himself from shaking violently. Trying to relieve himself of this anger, he picked up his phone again, teleported downstairs, picked up his car keys, and was out of the house, all the while ignoring his ringing phone.
***
It was only when he got to the part of the woods and teleported to where the tree was that he realized where he was. Looking around, he stopped to look at his phone to find another missed call from Tyler and then two from Terri. He decided to return Tyler’s call, closing his eyes and immediately opening them back up.
“Hello, Kai. Where are you, man? Been trying to reach you. Your dad called me.”
Before Kaiden could answer, Tyler asked, “Did you - oh no, tell me you didn’t turn it off.”
Kaiden stared ahead.
“Man, why don't you want anyone to know where you are?”
Finally Kaiden spoke. “I’m fine, Ty.”
“I know that. Just wanna make sure you are really alright, man. Terri and the others are worried too, especially after since this girl -”
“Don’t, please.” Kaiden warned.
He could hear Tyler’s sigh as he responded. “Okay, cool. Do what you gotta do and call one of us soon.”
Finally, Kaiden said, “Will do,” before hanging up.
As he moved along the woods, trailing every path he walked, he could hear what sounded like rustling leaves behind him. He turned around sharply, still numbing his powers as he looked ahead. Not seeing anything relevant, he continued to walk. Maybe this was what he needed to clear his head. Maybe he would go hang out with Tyler and the guys later; but he needed this. It didn't take long before the sound came up again, and this time, he released a small air from his mouth, and his body began to take it all in, his power level going up by the second. And when he felt the sound directly behind him, he spun around quickly and grabbed the masked intruder by the neck. He stared at the intruder, unimpressed by the big height difference.
Dropping the intruder roughly on the ground, he proceeded to remove the mask. But he couldn't sense any powers.
“Who are you and why were you following me?”
He was surprised when the intruder began laughing hysterically as he stared briefly at the mask on his left side. When he attempted to pick it up, Kaiden kicked it so far away that it would take cutting down every tree in the woods to perhaps find it. But he didn’t care.
“I won't ask again. WHO ARE YOU?”
This time, the intruder attempted to run, but Kaiden was quick. With his left hand, he grabbed a hold of the intruder by the neck, noticing his long red hair and almost yellow-looking set of eyes.
When it looked like Kaiden was about to raise his right forefinger - the intruder still held off in mid-air, he spoke up, his voice a shaky breath. “Believe it or not, I wasn't trying to kill you.”
But Kaiden had had enough as his eyes grew more intense.
“I don’t believe you,” he finally said before twirling his forefinger, causing the intruder to begin making choking sounds. When Kaiden was satisfied with the still form in his hands, he dropped the body on the ground. Then he raised both hands up in the air before lowering them, causing a flush of heavy wind to break the lifeless body into pieces. Not up to a minute later, he immediately heard the faint sound of a gasp behind him. It wasn’t too loud, but he’d heard it. Turning around sharply, he met the eyes of Zara. He didn't waste any second as he began slowly making his way towards her.
Uh-oh, what now?
